What to wear

In general, the level of dress required increases with the value of the ticket that you buy. In the Members, Club or Premier enclosure, men are generally expected to wear a jacket and tie; for the Tattersalls, Grandstand or Paddock, smart casual is preferred, while casual dress is accepted in the Silver Ring and Picnic areas of the course.

In addition, some courses, and certain racing days, have particular dress requirements:

  • At Haydock Park, no jeans, tracksuits or trainers are permitted on any area of the course. The Premier Suite requires a jacket and tie.
  • At Market Rasen and Newmarket, smart dress is required in the County Enclosure. Smart shorts and jeans are acceptable in the Tattersalls Enclosure, but bare tops and singlets are not.
  • At Epsom Downs, men visiting the Queen’s Stand are asked to wear a jacket, collar and tie on Ladies Day, when many ladies choose to wear hats. On Derby Day, men must wear black or grey morning dress in the Queen’s Stand, with ladies wearing a formal day dress or trouser suit with a hat. The Grandstand dress on both days is smart casual, with bare tops and singlets not allowed. In the Grandstand hospitality boxes, men must wear a jacket, collar and tie and many ladies choose to wear hats.
