Situated in a majestic natural amphitheatre beneath the Cotswold Hills, Cheltenham is at the heart of all that is best about Jump racing. Racing here takes place from October to May, with the Autumn highlight being The Open, over three days in mid November. However, the meeting that attracts the focus of the sporting world is The Festival, four days of magical racing each March that sees champions crowned and legends created. The Festival boasts an atmosphere like no other, with the best horses from Britain and Ireland (and even from continental Europe) competing in front of huge and enthusiastic crowds of racegoers for many of the biggest prizes in jump racing, including the totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Cheltenham’s facilities are everything you’d expect from a world-class racecourse, with a range of enclosures, seating areas, restaurants and bars to suit almost all tastes and budgets. However, the racecourse is about so much more than just racing. From conferences to concerts, exhibitions to gala dinners and meetings for 2 to 2,250, there are a wide range of facilities to suit any occasion in an inspiring and historic setting. From side-splitting comedians on tour to three day music festivals, through Classic Car auctions and wedding shows, to literary greats and thriving UK and international businesses, Cheltenham hosts them all. The biggest crowds though are reserved for the racing - and the sound of 65,000 people cheering on the horses in the Cheltenham Gold Cup is an experience that should not be missed.
Many people extend their stay to make the most of England's most complete Regency town and the rolling Cotswolds, Britain's largest designated area of outstanding natural beauty. The town itself is famed for its stylish shops, cosmopolitan restaurants and bars, its public squares and gardens and a long list of wonderfully diverse festivals, all set in a perfect canvas of picture postcard English countryside.
