About Newmarket

Newmarket is both the historical home and the headquarters of British horseracing. It is where Britain's first race was run more than three centuries ago and its two legendary flat courses are housed in the world's largest expanse of tended grassland. The site also incorporates the National Stud, the National Horseracing Museum, over 70 trainers and over 2,500 racehorses.

The NatWest Rowley Mile course holds racing in spring and autumn, including the first two classics of the year - the Stan James 1,000 Guineas and 2,000 Guineas in May. The summer racing programme on the July course includes the three-day July festival and is accompanied by the Newmarket Nights programme of open-air concerts. Past years performers include Jools Holland, Westlife and McFly.

Facilities
Newmarket's extensive refurbishment of the July Course was completed in 2007 to much acclaim. The charm of the old Grandstand was preserved while a £9m development plan added cafes, restaurants and bars as well as two open-sided elliptical pavilions to enhance the course's garden party atmosphere.

Enclosures include the Premier enclosure, requiring smart dress, which features views of the winning post, parade rings and winners circle. Less formal is the Grandstand and paddock, also providing good viewing, whilst the Rowley enclosure offers a family atmosphere with picnic areas and children's playground.

Locality
The Suffolk town of Newmarket has racing at its heart. It was the original home of the Jockey Club and remains the headquarters of many national and international racing organisations.

Newmarket is also the home of Tattersalls, the famous bloodstock auctioneers. Its sales are attended by the biggest names in racing. You can discover more of the history of the sport at Newmarket's National Horseracing Museum.
