About Exeter

Exeter Racecourse sits high on the top of Haldon Hill, just outside Exeter, with wonderful views down towards Dartmoor. At 850ft it is the highest racecourse in the land, the second longest at 2 miles, and has been described as not only one of the loveliest courses, but one of the fairest tracks in the country. Horse racing was first recorded here 350 years ago, during the reign of Charles II. Back then, the first prize was £50 – it’s since risen to over £60,000.

Exeter has a reputation of being a fair and testing track, with many good horses starting their racing careers here and going on to achieve great success and fame. Desert Orchid won his first steeplechase here in 1985, with Best Mate doing the same in 2000.

Exeter holds 16 fixtures between October and May, with November’s William Hill Gold Cup Meeting and the popular New Year’s Day meeting providing the highlights.

Facilities
The corporate hospitality, restaurant and conference facilities offer racegoers the chance to enjoy this historic venue in many different ways. The 160-seater Desert Orchid restaurant has an unrivalled view of the finishing straight and the winning post. You can keep your table for the whole afternoon and you do not need to move from the room to make use of a fully licensed Bar and Tote betting stand. In addition to many bars and restaurants, Exeter also offers a children’s play area and a viewing gallery for disabled guests.

Locality
The medieval town of Exeter stands on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, featuring woodland valleys, ancient tors and, of course, ponies. To the south lies the Dorset and East Devon Coast, also known as the Jurassic Coast. This UNESCO World Heritage Site stretches for 95 miles, recording 185 million years of the earth’s history.
