About Aintree

The world-famous Grand National steeplechase has lent Aintree a mystique all of its own. Racing history has been made here on many occasions: in 1976 the nation was reduced to tears when the legendary Red Rum overcame humble beginnings to win a record three Nationals, while dynamic duo Bob Champion and Aldaniti defied greater odds to win in 1981.

The course’s famous fences, such as Becher's Brook and The Chair, are almost as celebrated as the race itself. But they are just some of things that make every Grand National a heady mix of high drama and excitement for the horses, trainers, jockeys and fans.

Facilities
The recently opened, spectacular Grandstand complex has helped to make Aintree the finest venue in the region in which to stage conferences, parties and other events. The £35m refurbishment programme has also delivered a new parade ring, winning enclosure and weighing room, as well as an international equestrian centre that can hold up to 14,000 people.

Locality
Aintree is just outside Liverpool, set to become the ‘European Capital of Culture’ in 2008. The city has more galleries and museums than any other city in the UK and its musical heritage is also a major draw. The National Trust is now offering tours of the childhood homes of both Sir Paul McCartney and John Lennon.
