ABOUT NEWMARKET
Newmarket is both the historical home and the headquarters of British horseracing. It is where Britain’s first race was run more than three centuries ago and its two legendary flat courses are housed in the world's largest expanse of tended grassland. The site also incorporates the National Stud, the National Horseracing Museum, over 70 trainers and over 2,500 racehorses.
The Rowley Mile course holds racing in spring and autumn, including the first two classics of the year – the stanjames.com 1,000 Guineas and the stanjames.com 2,000 Guineas in May and in the autumn stages both Britain’s most valuable raceday - totesport Cambridgeshire Day and Britain’s highest class raceday – Champions’ Day.
The summer racing programme on the July course includes the three-day Newmarket July festival featuring Newmarket’s most stylish raceday – Lanson Ladies Day.
The July Course also hosts the extremely popular Newmarket Nights, Friday evening racing followed by a live open-air concert by a well known band or artiste. Past years’ performers include Simply Red, Boyzone, Pussycat Dolls and Girls Aloud.
FACILITIES
The Rowley Mile boasts world-class racing in world-class facilities with the modern and imposing Millennium Grandstand, opened by the Queen in 2000. The Millennium Grandstand has a number of bars and restaurants which cater for every racegoers needs and also provides a number of viewing areas.
The July Course is an oasis of sun-dappled trees, velvet lawns, flourishing flowers, traditional grandstands and thatched roofed buildings and offers racegoers a number of bars and restaurants. The romance of the surroundings creates a garden party atmosphere unlike any other racecourse and there are lots of open-air bars and al-fresco restaurants for racegoers to enjoy racing in the height of summer.
Enclosures across both the courses include the Premier enclosure, requiring smart dress, which features views of the winning post, parade rings and winners’ circle. Less formal is the Grandstand and paddock, also providing good viewing, whilst the Rowley / Garden enclosure offers a family atmosphere with picnic areas, children’s playground and a variety of free children’s activities. Children under 16 are also admitted free of charge.
LOCALITY
The Suffolk town of Newmarket has racing at its heart. It was the original home of the Jockey Club and remains the headquarters of many national and international racing organisations.
Newmarket is also the home of Tattersalls, the famous bloodstock auctioneers. Its sales are attended by the biggest names in racing.
